Podcast Review: 'High Notes celebrates audio with style & grace.'

It’s a funny thing creating a podcast. Of course it's great as a marketing exercise, but anyone that keeps going will tell you that it is most certainly a labour of love. You build your tiny team and, getting all Rick Rubin on you, the act of creating becomes the most important thing. You continue to do it, no matter what your medium is: paint, pencil, mixed media, audio, or even, Bristol style, chewing gum:

A lovely thing

Sometimes, just sometimes, when the digital noise subsides and the keyboard warriors have retired to bed, something pops up and surprises you - a genuine, sincere, human-created review of your labour-of-love podcast. Which cheers you right up and lifts the team’s spirits.

Frank Rapiocci is a US-based author who is a writer for the Ear Worthy publication, and he wrote us a review this week that we can be really proud of. Frank writes:

‘HIGH NOTES is a superb podcast…another example of how podcasting can help support and grow your business..with its superb four-minute trailer [and] most shows falling within the 35-minute sweet spot...Melissa Thom is a superb podcast host and interviewer. I could just listen to her voice all day, like easy-listening music that relaxes me. Thom has a challenging job. Convincing and reminding non-voiceover people that it is an exceedingly difficult job that takes training and commitment.’

And here’s our favourite quote of the whole review, which we’ll run past our top UK sports broadcasting talent here at BRAVA, Rob Mullarkey:

‘Voiceover work is like sports broadcasting. Everybody believes they can excel at it when, in reality, it requires innate talent, extensive training, and a commitment to improvement.’

Frank highlights some of his favourite episodes, including those with Curtis James, one of our all-time top conversations, talking about the challenges of working-class representation in creative fields, public speaking anxiety, and the nuances of voice and accent in public perception; Andrew Whiledon Dennis, exploring his extensive career in video games and Frank’s personal highlight reel - Kate Hansen Birnbaum from Pixar.

Frank rounds off his review with this:

‘A show about voiceover acting on an audio podcast is the perfect fit. High Notes glorifies the magic of audio, explains the technical aspect of voiceover work, and celebrates audio done with style and grace.

High Notes also offers listeners the mellifluous voice of its creator and host, Melissa Thom. I highly recommend the show, even if you are not in the voiceover industry.’

We’ll take it - thank you Frank for listening. A massive shout-out to the crew that make it all happen - Melissa Thom, Euan McAleece, David MacGregor and Carla O Shaughnessy.
